Don’t Let Your Heating System Fail This Winter

Winter in the Bay Area isn’t exactly like winter in Vancouver or Detroit. But it can get quite windy, chilly and rainy up here, so it makes sense to tune your HVAC system to prevent your heating from failing in the dead of winter.

A Multi-Step Process to Prep Your HVAC for the Winter

Heating and Cooling contractorFirst things first, look at your air conditioning circuit, and turn it off before winter hits. Otherwise, water trapped inside could possibly freeze and cause structural damage. Wash your A/C to get rid of bugs, grime, leaves, bird doo and clippings. Let the unit dry totally before you go to the next stage.

Once the unit is dry, put foam pipe over the exposed pipes. This will protect the pipes against temperatures that dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Such cold snaps might be a rare occurrence where you live, but it’s good idea to do this as a precaution. A single unexpected frost can create all sorts of problems that can damage the infrastructure of your HVAC.

Use duct tape to hold the pipe covers on the pipes. Also consider covering the HVAC unit with a waterproof vinyl or plastic cover and wrapping that cover with bungee cords or ropes. That way, gusty Bay Area winds won’t blow it away. Lastly, check your A/C on weekly basis to make sure that it’s secure, and remove debris, leaves and brambles from the unit.
